Art Jobs & Careers

Many school administrators and politicians don't believe that a degree in the arts will get you a decent career or prepare you to be a better citizen. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are art careers in special effects, illustration, web design, art direction, museum direction, graphic design, architecture, fashion, and more. Because of their belief, arts programs are being cut across the country. This section is an attempt to help make administrators and politicians aware of the importance of the arts in the work force and to inform students of a few of their career opportunities. You can also find a list of open art positions and links where you can do additional searches and to resources that will help you find your next job.

School districts are removing their art programs due to the fact that high-stakes testing doesn't include the arts. However, many are hiring teachers of other subject areas to either teach the arts or integrate them into what they feel are the core subjects. There is a need for teachers with no formal training to find resources easily to help them in their quest.

Today, if you can’t throw a high-stakes test at something it isn’t seen as worthy because schools feel it doesn't help student regurgitate for the tests. Common Core hasn't helped the issue. Every single subject must be measurable or it’s done for.

Research shows that the arts DO improve test scores. We see over and over again that schools with strong arts programs have students who perform better on tests. The arts also keep students in high school. For some, it is the only thing keeping them from terminating their public school education.

Finally, there are many jobs in the arts that pay quite well. In this economy, every job matters and if students aren't being prepared for them, someone else will be getting the job. In this section you will find just a small cross section of jobs to be had in the visual arts. If your school doesn't offer an arts program, then take responsibility yourself for your future and study up on what's available. You can also visit the list of many art schools across the world.
