UNIT: Art History Research - Cross Curricular
Grade Level: 6th grade (middle school)
Summary:
Students select an artist of their choice, research, then create a composition of an area of their school "in the style of" the artist of their choice. They write a report to share with the class. Shown: Welcoming Stairway in the style of Chagall.
Materials:
Open media (within reason)
18" x 24" (46 x 61 cm) Drawing Paper (46 x 61 cm)
Visual resources/prints for a variety of artists from several time periods.
Objectives:
Students create a drawing of an area of the school and render it in the style of one the artist presented (from art prints - Stephanie used her table artists). For a cross curricular lesson, students are expected to write a report to share with the rest of the class in order to obtain understanding of several famous styles of art.
Procedures:
Engage students in the discuss regarding the various artistic styles of artists presented in reproductions, giving background information on each artist (students select artist from the group presented)
Students create four thumbnail of the school working to show inspiration of chosen artist's style, for instance, a student studying Chagall would work to draw the school in a surrealistic manner.
Student and teacher will choose the best of the thumbnails to finish in medium of student's choosing.
Language Arts Assignment:
Students write a one page paper to be presented orally, describing their artist's background, their artistic style and what made it important. As a finishing touch, students explain how they incorporated their artist's style into their art project.
