Zoom In on Plants

Submitted by: Mahran Abou Fakhr, art teacher at New Orient Academy, Lebanon.

Lesson: Digital Photography Lesson
Grade level: Elementary - 4th grade (ages 9-10)

 

Objectives:

• Students observe different shape, color, and texture of plants.

• Students create photos of plants.

• The learner will create a photograph of closeup object using a mobile phone camera.

•Students will identify major structures of common plants.

• Students take photos in different Style (Auto, panorama, continuous shot).•Recognize mobile device for creating art.


Materials:
Teacher examples, mobile phone with camera, PowerPoint, plants and flowers, plants photos, computer, color Printer.


Procedure:
Day 1: Discuss photography and smartphone cameras. Show teacher example. Show PowerPoint and various smartphone artworks. Show photos of plants.
• Discuss artwork of photographers who are experimenting in mixed media like David Rams and Karen Divine. Teacher leads discussion on how mobile phone has allowed more people to become part of the art world
• Teacher leads a discussion on how artists and scientists nature in photography.
• Whole class uses a real plant to identify the plant parts (root, leaf, stem, and flower) and observe their shapes, colors, and textures. A teacher explains capturing photo procedures.

Day 2: Students take a photo of plants in zoom in technique and using different scene modes (Auto- Animated GIF- continuous shot).
• Students save the photo on CD for the next day.
• Students present their work and its meaning. The students choose their favorite photograph.
• Teacher then prints their one favorite photograph to the color printer.
• Clean up.
