Title: Monoprints with Markers
Grade level: 3rd through 5th grades
Materials Needed:
2 sheets of Drawing Paper
(per students)
Tray of water
Goals / Objectives:
Introduce the students to the art of printmaking, even without access to a Speedball Press.
Lesson Description:
In this lesson, students will be introduced to printmaking. Show the students examples of prints (such as monoprints) and have them note the kinds of design used. Explain the difference between a negative and positive image.
To create their own print, the students will color an image using washable markers. If there is time, students should lightly sketch the contour lines of the subject matter they want print first. The pencil lines should be light enough not to be seen through the markers. The more color they add with the markers, the better. Make sure that the students know that whatever they draw and color will print backwards on their print. If the are going to write words, they must be written like
they are in a mirror.
After the student completes his picture, he will submerge the colored paper into the tray of water. Lay the image ink side up on a flat surface and place the other sheet of paper on top of it. Press the paper into the bottom sheet, so that the ink will transfer. Very carefully, peel the two sheets apart. The blank sheet will have a print of the original image.
Assessment:
Did the student create a visually interesting work?
Does the student understand that the print will be backwards from the original?
Book: Simple Printmaking - An inspiring book for beginning printmakers and crafters... Beyond the usual sections on materials, tools, and techniques, it offers one and two page vignettes on Gauguin, Munch, 19th-century Japanese woodcuts, etc... explores eraser prints, carving Linoleum
blocks, woodcuts, and making printing blocks out of Polymer Clay.
