Introduction:
Students will learn and apply the basic fundamentals of creating a collage or montage as they create an original composition based on found items brought in from home as well as in the classroom. They will incorporate language arts skills as they write poems which convey sensory details present within their composition. summarizing as they listen first to a model story and then complete an original story based on their projects.
Goals / Objectives:
The goal is for the student to acquire basic knowledge, skills and experience with the planning and creation of a collage or montage in which they incorporate their awareness of sensory skills in gathering and arranging their found items to create a visually pleasing composition. They incorporate language arts skills in the creation of original poetry that reflects the message they wish their piece to convey.
The student will produce an original collage or montage from items found at home, in the classroom or a combination of each.
The student will use art elements of space and texture as he creates a collage with a point of interest (emphasis) and unity.
The student will incorporate observational and tactile knowledge of items in producing his project.
The student will incorporate language arts writing skills as he creates an original rhyming poem conveying sensory detail incorporated in his artistic composition.
The student will associate concrete ideas with appropriate vocabulary.

Each child will need:
Found items brought from home and access found items in classroom such as pieces of cloth, string, newspaper/magazine/old photos, wallpaper scraps, Tissue paper
, lace, items from nature such as pine cones, pine needles, tiny stones, sand, shells, etc.
10 x 10 or 10 x 12 (25 x 25 or 25 x 30.5 cm) Cardboard
Paint Brushes
Clean water
Integrated Activity:
The students will use language arts listening and writing skills. They will listen to model poems from An Egret's Day, read aloud by the teacher. They will incorporate their knowledge of poetry with the focus of their composition as they create an original rhyming poem reflecting a point of significance about their focus object.

Art Elements and Art Principles of Art Design:
Space, texture, emphasis, unity
Vocabulary Terms:
Space – positive space is the actual object, while negative space is the space surrounding it
Texture – how something feels
Emphasis – what draws your attention in the piece
Unity – everything is connected to make the whole picture, like pieces of a puzzle, everything is needed to make the picture
Sensory – has to do with your five senses
Rhyme – words whose endings sound the same
Collage – a creation made with materials and objects that are pasted over a surface to create a picture or message
Montage – a picture that is created by pasting many smaller pictures to create designs
Procedure:
Set up:
Place supply baskets with enough materials for each group or table in designated supply area.
Whole class discussion of concept of creating a collage or montage, describing process and procedures as well as incorporating vocabulary words (Written on board in advance)
Preview project and instructions with class, stressing the importance of planning and organizing objects before gluing. Show examples, model process for visual learners, leaving examples up for visual reference.
Read aloud several poems from An Egret's Day as models for poems.
Helpers pass out table supply baskets.
Students will choose items that work together to create a theme.
Student will arrange items in an interesting and pleasing manner to them. Students will rearrange items at least three times before settling on a layout and gluing items down.
Student will decide on location to place his focal point, then begin to glue objects down from the background to the foreground.
When student has completed his collage/montage, he will then spend a few moments reflecting on his piece before composing an original rhyming poem which incorporates sensory detail present in his art work.
Student will leave both art work and poem together on student desk. Art should not be moved until completely dry.
Display student art work in conjunction with original poem.

Student made original collage/montage from found items 20 points
Student incorporated elements of space, texture, emphasis and unity 20 points
Student used both observational and tactile knowledge of items in producing his project 20 points
Student wrote original rhyming poem, incorporating sensory detail present in his work 20 points
