Elementary / Middle School Art Vocabulary Words

Elementary Art Vocabulary Words

Below is an alphabetized list of art related vocabulary words. Some of these words are appropriate to the primary level but most are appropriate to the intermediate elementary and middle school level. Of course these words are also used at the high school and college level, but most are introduced at a younger age.

Michael Gerrish of WhyArt forwarded a few great art vocabulary links that are also very useful to art teachers and students and may include some omitted from the list below:

The list below was submitted compliments of art teacher Kathie Abrams. Says Abrams, "I looked up our district's art curriculum for 5th Grade and Gifted and Talented. For those two grades I found 350 vocabulary words. The 220 for the 5th grade implied that for my 36 class meetings a year (not counting assemblies, field trips, etc.), students are expected to master 6 vocabulary words an art period, not counting master artists, their biographical information, or review of words that weren't included because, I assume, they were supposed to have been mastered earlier, such as emphasis and variety."
